Ghost I met, 2013
The dense fabric on which the motifs are printed is intended for curtains in Kabuki theater and comes from a workshop in Kyoto, the stronghold of Japanese tradition. On prolonged viewing, the patterns, figures and ornaments that Tezuka has collaged in layers become clear. The left half of the picture evokes an Asian, the right a European set of forms. A ghostly outline hovers above the dividing line in the center like a dark cloud. This is how Tezuka sees herself – as a mediator between East and West.
