When the “Islamic State” ruled in Manbij in northern Syria, women had to wear the burqa in public. In 2016, the SDF (Syrian Democratic Forces) succeeded in liberating the region and the burqas were banned. A video by Shervan Derwish, one of the leading commanders of the SDF, captures a woman triumphantly pulling the burqa over her head.
