The Museu Afro Brasil in São Paulo is dedicated to the African presence in Brazil. Evidence of plantation colonialism (such as torture instruments) is as much part of the program as are the various manifestations of African cultural forms, religious practices and arts. What makes the museum special is the artistic display of its founding director, Emanoel Araujo (1940 – 2022). Araujo, who was an eminent modernist sculptor, relied heavily on the power and inherent life of the objects in the collection, many of which belonged to himself.
