Haiti’s revolutionary forces united at the Congress of Arcahaie (1803). Jean-Jacques Dessalines, one of the leaders, tore the white center band from the French Tricolore on this occasion. Catherine Flon, his goddaughter, sewed the remaining red and blue stripes back together. With that, Haiti had its national flag. Later, the blue was replaced by black, true to the motto: “Death or life”.
